MASSENA -- Rep. Elise Stefanik says she isn’t yet sure if Department of Homeland Security staff along the northern border is adequate, inadequate or just right.
DHS oversees agencies including U.S. Border Patrol and Customs and Border Protection.
“I’m meeting with a lot of border representatives and assessing what their needs are,” she told a reporter on Thursday night.
She believes the issue revolves around “[making] sure that Homeland Security has adequate funding.”
“I think the Department of Homeland Security should be fully funded,” she said.
The Republican congresswoman said she was stopped at a Border Patrol checkpoint while campaigning for her seat.
“My personal experience is it was fairly smooth, quick. I felt the agents were doing their jobs,” she said.
Stefanik’s comments preceded Jess Cooke of Ogdensburg reaching out to NorthCountryNow and providing a video where Cooke was Tased and tackled to the ground at a Border Patrol checkpoint. She had refused a trunk search and resisted an order to move.
