Rep. Stefanik and Cobb spar following Spectrum debate; candidates to debate again tonight on WWNY

21st Congressional District candidate Tedra Cobb and incumbent Elise Stefanik touted their showing at a Spectrum News debate in Albany Monday. Dr. Lynn S. Kahn, also vying for the seat, is running on the Green Party ballot line and as an independent.

Cobb, former St. Lawrence County legislator and Democratic candidate for New York’s 21st Congressional District, participated in the second debate at Spectrum News in Albany with Kahn and Rep. Stefanik. The next debate will be at WWNY-TV Fox 7 in Watertown today.

Tedra Cobb

A statement from Cobb’s office said:

“Rep. Stefanik has refused to participate in a debate that would be held before a live audience.

“During the debate, Tedra Cobb continued to explain how Elise Stefanik and this Congress have failed to address the healthcare needs in the North Country. Cobb also highlighted her plans to to act on issues ranging from veterans affairs, the gun violence epidemic, immigration crisis and more.

“Having failed to act on the most important issues facing our community, Rep. Stefanik is resorting to a negative and dishonest campaign and taking credit for the work of others. The fact is, she has failed to show leadership and vote in the interests of her district.

“Cobb was recently endorsed by the Post-Star, which endorsed Stefanik in 2016, as well as the Times Union. The Post-Star highlighted Stefanik’s vote to kick people with pre-existing conditions off their insurance as one of the reasons behind their endorsement of Cobb.

“As I travel across Northern New York, I hear time and time again from voters that they are supporting my campaign because they know I will be accountable to them, not lobbyists in DC. This debate highlighted once again that Rep.Stefanik is beholden to corporate special interests and always puts them first, not us,” said Cobb.

Elise Stefanik

Stefanik campaign Communications Director Lenny Alcivar released the following statement following the debate:

"Congresswoman Elise Stefanik was the overwhelming winner of tonight's debate, standing with North Country voters in supporting our US military and our veterans, promoting a strong immigration and border security policy, standing with our farmers and working on a bipartisan basis to make health care more affordable and more accessible" said Alcivar.

"While Congresswoman Stefanik highlighted her bipartisan record of results, Democrat Tedra Cobb once again failed to offer any substantive policy proposals, dodging on her support for Governor Andrew Cuomo while opposing the Farm Bill, our military defense bill and US-Canadian trade.

"For the second debate in a row, Congresswoman Stefanik was tonight's clear winner. The Stefanik campaign thanks our supporters for watching this important debate, and Spectrum News for hosting all the candidates as a service to the voters of the 21st District."

Kahn did not reach out to North Country Now with comment.
