Congressman Bill Owens recently voted in favor of a resolution that would require the continuation of the tuition assistance program for military service members.

The program was cut early in March due to sequestration.

Congress voted to fund the tuition program last week as part of a continuing resolution to fund government operations through the fiscal year. That vote requires the Defense Department to reinstate the tuition assistance program.

The president has signed the measure.

“Today’s announcement represents a promise kept to those who serve in the armed forces,” Owens said. “Reinstatement of the tuition assistance program is good for military personnel who use the program, the institutions where the benefits are used and the overall readiness of the force.”

The benefits offered will likely remain the same as those offered prior to the sequestration, according to the Department of Defense. The program offers up to $4,500 per year per service member.
