WASHINGTON – President Obama is ordering federal agencies to approve the southern part of the Keystone Pipeline from Cushing, Oklahoma to the Gulf Coast, and 23rd District Rep. Bill Owens says it’s a good idea.
“I am pleased to see progress with the construction of a section of the Keystone Pipeline. This is a good step towards a project that will create jobs and enhance cooperation with trusted allies like Canada to meet America’s energy needs.”
Owens, a Plattsburgh Democrat, said rising fuel prices make the pipeline more important.
“Conflict and demand overseas are driving up prices at the pump for commuters, farmers and families, and projects like the Keystone Pipeline have the potential to bring some relief.”
The president has put on hold the northern section of the proposed pipeline, from the Canadian tar sands in Alberta to Nebraska, postponing a decision on that until next year.
“We need an all-of-the-above approach to energy security, and the Keystone pipeline is a move in the right direction. As TransCanada prepares to resubmit the plan for presidential approval, I urge the White House to approve the entire project in full recognition of its potential for economic development and the opportunity to produce more energy here at home.”
