CANTON -- A proposal to study a new highway that would connect Watertown to Plattsburgh continues to receive praise from North Country officials.

North Country Rep. Bill Owens and St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency Vice Chairman Ernie LaBaff credited Gov. Andrew Cuomo for including a feasibility study proposal in his recent State of the State speech.

“I am extremely pleased that Gov.Cuomo has recognized the importance to the North Country of improving our transportation infrastructure. This is another example of the Governor demonstrating his understanding of the unique challenges faced by the North Country and his willingness to work with us to overcome these challenges," Labaff said. "We have some of the highest unemployment rates, lowest wages and highest poverty levels throughout the State. Those who say “leave the North Country the way it is” are not concerned about its people. The economic life of Northern New York will be greatly enhanced when I98 is achieved."

Owens was also pleased with the announcement.

“I am encouraged by Governor Cuomo’s decision to study the North Country transportation corridor,” Representative Bill Owens said. “This is a commonsense step forward for our region. As we all know, infrastructure including Interstates 81 and 87, the St. Lawrence Seaway and rural broadband are critical to economic growth and job creation. I look forward to working with my constituents and the governor as this study takes shape.”
