Democrats launch phone campaign linking GOP congressional hopeful Doheny to v-p candidate Ryan's budget that 'ends Medicare'

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has launched a telephone campaign connecting Republican challenger Matt Doheny to Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget “that ends Medicare,” the committee said.

Republican candidate for president Mitt Romney has chosen Ryan, a Republican from Wisconsin who chairs the House Budget Committee, to be his running mate. The Democrats’ candidate in the 21st Congressional District, Rep. Bill Owens of Plattsburgh, is running to keep his seat. Democrats are trying to make the most of issues around the so-called “Ryan budget,” a controversial plan that would drastically cut domestic spending.

Doheny, a Watertown Republican who lost to Owens in 2010, is the object of the telephone campaign “to expose Matt Doheny (NY-21) and his Republican leaders, who supported Ryan’s budget that ends Medicare. Paul Ryan is the architect of the budget that House Republicans voted for, which ends Medicare while protecting tax breaks for millionaires,” the DCCC said.

The committee points to a report by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, which found that the Ryan plan would raise health care costs for seniors by $6,400, while the Tax Policy Center found it would cut taxes for people making over $1 million a year by $265,000, according to the DCCC.

The calls are to begin this week and are the latest phase in the “Drive for 25” campaign, the DCCC’s plan to win the House.

The script of the automated phone call in the 21st CD follows:

“Hi. This is Julie calling from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to alert you to a new development about Medicare.

Republican candidate for Congress Matt Doheny is backed by Washington Republicans whose budget would end Medicare and now the budget’s architect, Paul Ryan, is the Republican candidate for Vice President.

A nonpartisan analysis showed that Ryan’s budget would raise health care costs for seniors by $6,400. The Tax Policy Center also said the Ryan budget would give people making over $1 million a year an average tax break of $265,000.

That’s just wrong.

Call Matt Doheny at 315-405-4702 and tell him to not protect millionaires at the expense of Medicare and the middle class.”
