Rep. Owens calls FEMA denial of aid to St. Lawrence County 'unfortunate'

Rep. Bill Owens is calling “unfortunate” the denial Friday from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for assistance to those New Yorkers who suffered damage from heavy spring weather and flooding.

Owens, a Plattsburgh Democrat representing the 23rd Congressional District, received word Friday from FEMA that portions of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s request had been denied.

Flooding along the Raquette River caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to private property, but FEMA’s decision disallows compensation for that.

“It is unfortunate that FEMA has decided to deny Governor Cuomo’s request for individual assistance for counties affected by spring flooding,” Owens said.

“I urge the governor to appeal this decision and will support his effort should he decide to do so. Severe weather has caused a great amount of damage to property and local economic development, and it is critical that our communities receive the assistance they need to recover,” said Owens.
