CANTON – The state Department of Transportation has confirmed that U.S. Route 11 in Canton -- Main Street -- is expected to be reopened at the railroad crossing to traffic by tonight.
That section had been closed and traffic diverted while work on the crossing proceeded.
Beginning Monday, Aug. 19, traffic between Park Place and Stiles Avenue will be controlled by flaggers, with alternating traffic during work hours.
The recommended detour will still be in place for through traffic. Motorists choosing to use Main Street can expect minor delays.
A section of East Main Street was closed while work was done on the railroad crossing, part of a major rebuilding of the road from Stiles Avenue to Riverside Drive, a stretch of about a mile.
After the two-year reconstruction project downtown, the project, which included major sewer work and sidewalk reconstruction, is due to be finished by the fall.
