Ogdensburg's Remington Museum appoints curator Foster as new executive director for museum and its exceptional collection

OGDENSBURG -- The Frederic Remington Art Museum has a new executive director.

The museum’s board of trustees voted unanimously to appoint Laura A. Foster as executive director of the museum at their October meeting, and the contract was put in place at last night’s board meeting.

Foster has been curator at the museum for over 24 years as is a natural choice to fill the position, the news release from the museum said.

An expert on Frederic Remington’s art, Foster’s collections experience will enable her to serve as curator while directing the museum.

Her work benefits from well-developed relationships with professional colleagues, museum staff and trustees, donors and the local community, the museum’s statement said.

Interim executive director since May, Foster has already taken on the jobs of administration, finance and budgeting, development planning, and public relations.

“I am surprised at how much I love this work,” Foster said.

“It’s been so interesting to see the museum’s operation from the executive director position. I’m amazed at all I’ve learned, and am especially thankful to the museum’s trustees and staff, who have developed a new level of teamwork, and been incredibly helpful to me as we move forward together.

“There is a great deal of work to do to stabilize the museum as our five-year Centennial Campaign draws to a close. I’m excited about the progress we will make as we turn our focus away from the essential work of restoring our 203 year old mansion and toward new financial security and development of new initiatives in education, exhibits and program,” said Foster.

President of the Board of Trustees William J. Cavanaugh said, “The trustees of the museum are very happy to finalize the appointment of Laura as executive director. Laura brings a lot of experience and enthusiasm to the table. She shares the board’s vision for excellence and we are all looking forward to working with her.”

The museum’s 30th Annual Holiday Gala on Saturday, Dec. 14 will be an opportunity for the public to meet Foster.
