Registration of UTVs included in proposed state budget; Sen. Ritchie says move is a ‘major step forward’

A proposed budget put forward the state Senate includes a measure that would allow registration of utility task vehicles (UTVs), according to Sen. Patricia Ritchie.

In recent months St. Lawrence County passed a resolution urging state lawmakers to act on the bill. Several municipalities and ATV clubs have also adopted the resolution.

The proposal would allow the Department of Motor Vehicles to register larger recreational vehicles, which would make the state more money, according to Ritchie.

“This is the first time the proposal to allow for the registration of UTVs has been included in the Senate’s budget proposal, and it marks a major step forward for the legislation,” Sen. Pattie Ritchie said in a news release. Assembly representatives Addie Russell and Ken Blankenbush and Sen. Joe Griffo are also in favor of the bill to increase the weight limits.

The release says many riders who currently can't register their UTVs in New York are doing so in other states.

“There are countless older riders, couples and families who travel elsewhere to register these larger recreational vehicle, and as a result, New York State is losing out," Ritchie says in the release.

The bill also has support from the Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association.
