Red Cross in Potsdam has new partner in NYSARC with storm shelter help

POTSDAM – The American Red Cross of Northern New York has a new partner after NYSARC in Canton opened its doors as a shelter during last weekend’s storm.

In response to the power outage and winter storms last weekend, they opened a shelter on Friday at the NYSARC building in Canton.

The shelter remained open through the night and into the day on until the power was restored.

Volunteers from the Northern New York Red Cross chapter and surrounding chapters worked to accommodate anyone who wished to stay at the shelter.

“We worked with St. Lawrence County Emergency Management and National Grid throughout the event to assess the community needs and assure their needs were met,” said Olga Grant, Potsdam branch manager. “This was an unfortunate situation, but people have come together to help.

“We have a new partner in NYSARC, and are grateful we were able to use their facility as a shelter site,” said Grant.

This and all disaster responses are made possible through donations from the American public, including people in this community, Grant said.
