NORWOOD -- The American Red Cross of Northern New York has opened a shelter at Norwood-Norfolk Central School, NYS HWY. 56.

The shelter, opened Saturday night, will provide a place where area residents can get food and a safe, warm place to stay until they can get back into their homes, said Jane Gendron, Community Executive of the American Red Cross of Northern New York.

As of 3 p.m., about 3,800 St. Lawrence County residents were without electricity as thick layers of ice on power lines and overhanging tree limbs caused power outages.
