Red Cross aids Winthrop family of five after their house burns

WINTHROP -- Volunteers from the North Country Chapter of the American Red Cross provided immediate emergency aid to a family of five following a home fire on state Route 420.

The Red Cross says they gave financial assistance for food and clothing, along with blankets and other cold weather supplies, to two adults and three children, ages 5, 7 and 14.

Volunteers also supplied comfort kits containing basic personal care items and stuffed animals for the childre, Red Cross said.

"In the coming days, Red Cross staff and volunteers will remain available to help the family as they navigate the road to recovery," the group said in a prepared statement.

The statement did not identify the family.
