Red Cross aiding Massena residents following fatal fire

MASSENA -- Volunteers from the North Country Chapter of the American Red Cross area offering assistance to three people following a fatal fire yesterday morning Thursday morning.

Police, fire and sheriff’s responded to a structure fire at 9:56 p.m. at 2224 State Rte. 420, which they identified as the Shari Caza residence.

Massena firefighters located an occupant in an upstairs bedroom. The person was taken to Massena Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead at 10:38 p.m.

In the wake of the incident the Red Cross provided financial assistance for necessities such as shelter, food and clothing to three adults.

Volunteers also offered emotional support and comfort kits containing personal care items. In the coming days, Red Cross staff and volunteers will remain available to help those affected by the fire as they navigate the road to recovery.

In 2016, the Red Cross responded to more than 400 home fires and other disasters in the 24-county Eastern New York Region. Red Cross staff and volunteers provided assistance, care and comfort to more than 2,000 local residents last year.
