CANTON -- A record number of 2- to 10-year-old runners contested races of either 55 or 200 meters for the honor of the “Fastest Kid in the North Country” as the St. Lawrence University Saints track and field program hosted the event last weekend.
A total of 86 children competed in age-appropriate races in one year age increments, with the younger 2-6 year group running 55 meters and the 7-10 year olds running 200 meters.
Very fast times were established, according to John Newman, who leads SLU's men's track and field and cross-country programs.
An event record was shattered in the 200 meters by 10-year-old Hannah Drechsel of Potsdam. Her time of 32.65 seconds bettered the old record of 35.25 set at the 2009 event by Mark Mahoney of Canton.
Age group winners include:
55 Meter Dash
2 yrs: Olivia Francy – 22.43
3 yrs: Vivian Coburn – 16.76
4 yrs: Matt Tupper – 13.92
5 yrs: John O’Neil – 11.91

A food or cash donation was accepted as an entry fee, which was forwarded to the local food pantry.
Next year’s event has already been scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 10 at 11 a.m., so get training, kids!
