Highs topped out at 90 degrees across much of St. Lawrence County Saturday, breaking and tying records set in 1978, and a new record could be tied or broken today as extreme heat is forecasted again, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
New record high temps were set in Canton and Ogdensburg yesterday as high rose to 90 degrees. The previous record was 86 degrees in 1978.
Gouverneur and Star Lake broke their record by 1 degree as 89 temps were recorded yesterday at KGTB Wheeler-Sack International Airport in Fort Drum, which is the nearest National Weather Service recording station for the southern portion of the county.
The previous record of 87 degrees was recorded in 2012.
The high of 90 yesterday,recorded at the National Weather Station at Massena's Richards Field, could be topped today as highs are expected to be around 91 with a heat index of 94 degrees, NWS says.
The record high for May 29 was 90 degrees set in 1978 as well.
It will be partly sunny and hot, with a 30 percent change of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 1 and 5 p.m. with some storms producing heavy rain, the service says.
Showers and thunderstorms are possible tonight, with a 40 percent chance, mainly after 7 p.m. with heavy rainfall possible.
The overnight low will be around 70 degrees.
Memorial day cool down a bit with highs near 81 and windy. Winds of 10 to 14 mph and gusts of 28 mph are possible.
There is a 30 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms, likely before 9 a.m.
The overnight low Monday will be around 56.
