OGDENSBURG -- The American Red Cross is aiding a family of four displaced by what they describe in a prepared statement as a “house fire,” but Ogdensburg fire officials say it was a problem with an electrical panel.
“It wasn’t quite a fire we fought,” said First Assistant Chief Donald McCarthy. “We pulled the fuse out and they have no power … it was quick. We were there a half hour.”
McCarthy said the fuses had started to smolder, so the house’s renter, Sara Wells, called the fire department.
“We took the fuse out and put it on a sidewalk,” McCarthy said, adding that firefighters thoroughly examined the house to be sure nothing was burning inside the wall.
He added that he believes it should be a simple fix to get the house back in order.
The house, at 212 Ogden St., is owned by Dan Griffith.
The Red Cross says they are providing “temporary shelter and financial assistance for replacement food to one adult and three children, ages 1, 6 and 9. Volunteers also supplied blankets, comfort kits containing personal care items and stuffed animals for the children.”
