Rain, warm and windy today in North Country; Thanksgiving travelers warned of snow

The National Weather Service has posted a hazardous weather outlook for the North Country due to gusty winds that are expected today and tomorrow as a warm front pushes through bringing unusually high temperatures.

Temperatures will drop Tuesday into Wednesday, and the NWS is predicting some snow from late Wednesday into Thanksgiving morning, which will impact holiday travelers. Those planning to travel late Wednesday through thanksgiving morning should keep apprised of the latest forecasts.

With rain today, mainly in the morning, south winds will blow at about 25 mph with gusts into the mid-30s, and high could reach into the low 60s. More rain is expected tonight as winds generally diminish, but strong gusts are still possible, according to the NWS. The highs tonight will remain well above freezing.

Strong winds are expected again for Tuesday with highs in the low to mid 40s.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• Today: Rain likely, mainly before 11am. Cloudy, with a high near 62. Breezy, with a south wind 22 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Tonight: A 50 percent chance of showers, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. Windy, with a southwest wind 24 to 29 mph decreasing to 18 to 23 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Tuesday: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 44. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

• Tuesday Night: Cloudy, with a low around 26. Southwest wind 9 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.

• Wednesday: Cloudy, with a high near 34. Southwest wind around 6 mph.

• Wednesday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 27. Light northwest wind.

• Thanksgiving Day: A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 33. Light and variable wind becoming northwest around 6 mph in the morning.

• Thursday Night: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 19. West wind 5 to 9 mph.

• Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 26. West wind around 9 mph.

• Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 18. South wind around 7 mph.

• Saturday: A chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 36. South wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

• Saturday Night: A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 26. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

• Sunday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 31. West wind 8 to 11 mph.
