Rain turning to snow in St. Lawrence County; snow could be heavy Tuesday

Rain is expected to fall today in St. Lawrence County mixing with snow in higher elevations changing to rain, while possibly heavy snow is expected Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

A hazardous weather outlook has been posted through Wednesday morning and a lake effect snow warning is up for southern St. Lawrence County, with heavy snowfall expected mainly Tuesday and Tuesday night in areas around Gouverneur and Edwards. As much as 8 to 10 inches could fall, the NWS says.

At least some chance of snow in the North Country is forecast by the National Weather all through this week.

High temperatures today will be around 40 degrees. Lows tonight will dip into the teens and low 20s with breezy conditions. It will remain cold tomorrow with highs expected to be in the low 20s in the south of the county and upper 20s elsewhere, with gusty winds.

The heaviest snow is expected to fall before midnight Tuesday night.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

• Today: Rain, possibly mixing with snow. High around 40. East wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

• Tonight: Rain and snow showers likely before 1am, then a slight chance of snow showers after 5am. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 20. Southwest wind 8 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

• Tuesday: A 50 percent chance of snow showers, mainly after 7am. Partly sunny, with a high near 29. Breezy, with a southwest wind 13 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

• Tuesday Night: Snow showers likely, mainly before midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 17. Breezy, with a southwest wind 11 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

• Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29. Southwest wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

• Wednesday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Increasing clouds, with a low around 22. South wind 9 to 11 mph.

• Thursday: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 32. Southwest wind 10 to 13 mph.

• Thursday Night: A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14. Southwest wind 8 to 10 mph.

• Friday: A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 24. West wind around 8 mph.

• Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 11. West wind around 7 mph.

• Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 27. Southwest wind 6 to 9 mph.

• Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 21. South wind around 10 mph.

• Sunday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. South wind around 8 mph.
