Hail, strong winds, lightning, heavy downpours possible in St. Lawrence Valley today

St. Lawrence County had a bit of rain this morning, and more, in the form of severe thunderstorms, could be on the way.

The National Weather Service says rain could total between half an inch and an inch of rain today and tonight. The weather service is predicting a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today and tonight, the best chance for some precipitation in a while, and the only rain in the forecast for the next week.

Some rain, even a heavy downpour, is better than none, but the weather service is warning of the dangers of strong thunderstorms, including high winds and the possibility of hail.

It will be hot again, with highs around 88 today.

Tomorrow, it’s back to sunny skies, with cooler temperatures through next Monday.

Today: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 2pm. Some storms could be severe, with large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 88. Southwest wind 11 to 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 9pm. Some storms could be severe, with large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. West wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. North wind 5 to 7 mph.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 52. Light and variable wind.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 75. Northeast wind 3 to 8 mph.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 50.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 76.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 53.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 78.

Saturday Night: Clear, with a low around 57.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 80.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 60.
