Rain, thunderstorms likely in North Country, dry, cool weather to return for holiday weekend

A low-pressure system is expected to sweep through the North Country today, moving southward before swinging back into the area as a warm front Tuesday night.

The warm front will likely bring rain showers and a few thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.

The service predicts periodic heavy rains and some thunderstorms through Thursday, with above average temperatures.

Cooler and drier weather is expected to return for Memorial Day weekend, the service said.

The full forecast follows:

• This afternoon: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Cloudy, with a high near 74. Northeast wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

• Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely, then occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 11pm. Low around 60. Northeast wind 5 to 7 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

• Wednesday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Southwest wind 7 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

• Wednesday Night: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. South wind 7 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

• Thursday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a high near 68. Southwest wind 11 to 16 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

• Thursday Night: A chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 54. North wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
