Walking or driving could get tricky over the next day or two as temperatures drop and rain turns to snow and ice.

The temperatures will drop fast starting tonight, and winds will be picking up.

The National Weather Service office in Burlington predicts that a mixture of rain or snow will overspread the North Country this afternoon, continuing this evening. This is confirmed by radar images that show a large swirl of precipitation moving through Pennsylvania and into New York.

It is possible that we will get a dusting to an inch of snow, and possibly two inches, especially in the higher elevations in the south of St. Lawrence County and elsewhere in the Adirondacks. It is possible that in some spots, there will be freezing rain, the NWS says.

Temperatures will begin falling from the 40s today to the mid-20s tonight, and continuing to fall during the day tomorrow to where it could be in the single digits by sunset Wednesday and in the minus range Wednesday night.

Precipitation will continue in various forms, freezing in the air and on the ground as it gets colder, perhaps gathering into another couple of inches on Wednesday. Winds will increase to 10 to 20 mph from the northwest, with some gusts, driving wind chills to between minus 5 and minus 20 Wednesday night.

Skies will clear Wednesday night and remain clear Thursday, bringing sunny skies and highs in the 20s.

The New Year’s weekend outlook is for cloudy skies and a middling chance of snow.
