HEUVELTON -- Thanks to a quick save by local firefighters, Lea’s Diner shouldn’t be closed for too long.

Heuvelton, Rensselaer Falls, Lisbon and Morristown firefighter saved Lea’s Diner from being destroyed Tuesday.

The 90 State Street diner owned by Steve Bogardus, a local veteran, was ablaze Tuesday afternoon, but a quick response from firefighters allowed the structure to be saved.

Heuvelton Fire Chief Nick Friot said firefighters were called to service at 2:20 p.m. and were on scene just two minutes later.

“Crews arrived on scene at 14:22 to find heavy smoke and flames erupting from the front of the structure near the roof,” he said.

Rensselaer Falls Fire Department, Lisbon Fire Department and Morristown Fire Department were activated to respond to the scene, and the crew from Heuvelton Department quickly brought the fire under control and contained the fire damage to the front of the structure on the roof area, Friot said.

“The damage was minimal and the business should be able to re-open in a short time,” he said. “The fast response and quick work of the Heuvelton Fire Department was instrumental in saving this new downtown business in Heuvelton.”

Friot said the fire is still being investigated, but more details will be available once the investigation is complete.
