CANTON -- A "quick knockdown" by Canton firefighters couldn't save a shed at the VFW on Gouverneur Street, but it "almost certainly" saved the main VFW hall, according to Fire Chief Robert Crowe.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. Crowe said the damage to the 12-by-12 shed and attached lean-to behind the hall was so extensive he expected investigators will have to take their time to trace the fire back to the point of origin.

A small gazebo adjacent to the shed was substantially damaged, and siding on the main VFW building at 34 Gouvenreur St. was melting when firefighters arrived.

Also damaged was a nearby Canton Housing Authority building.

Canton Fire and Rescue units were called out at 6:16 this morning. Chief Crowe said 22 members were on the scene. They reported back in service at 8:05 a.m.
