PYRITES – Members of the Canton Town Board and local stakeholders recently toured the Pyrites Hydroelectric Project as part of the project’s federal relicensing process.
The town board invited Enel Green Power North America Inc., the company that runs the project, to their meeting last week to present information about the relicensing process required by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
A site visit of the Pyrites hydroelectric dams followed the next day along with joint meetings with representatives from local organizations and government with interest in the Grass River.
Pyrites was last licensed in September 1983 and its current license will expire on Aug. 31, 2023. Licenses are issued for a term of 30 to 50 years. The license specifies the terms and conditions on how the project must be operated.
FERC requires license holders to announce their intention to renew about five years before their current license lapses.
