CANTON -- The public will have a chance to comment on a proposed hike in village parking fines.
The village board here set a public hearing to field comment on the proposal Nov. 20 at 6:20 p.m.
Parking fines currently are $10 for parking in a prohibited zone, parking on lawns, obstructing driveways and parking on the curb or sidewalk. The village board plans to pass a resolution increasing the fines from $10 to $25, a rate closer to what parking violators pay in neighboring communities.
A previous public hearing on the proposal was canceled last month to allow the village attorney and board to review the parking language in the village code and how it may relate to the rate increase.
The language in the code calls for parking fines up to $50 for violations, said Attorney Gerald Dusharme. The increase proposed by the board would merely require a resolution to approve, and not a code change, but the board is opting for a public hearing regardless to give residents a chance to comment on the increase.
