Proposed changes to fishing regulations could ease catch-and-release requirements along Jordan River from Carry Falls Reservoir in the towns of Colton and Hopkinton upstream.
The provision, proposed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation, is one of dozens across the state that are up for comment and review.
The draft regulation, pertaining specifically to trout, would delete the current catch-and-release regulation for that section of the Jordan River to the Franklin County line because “this regulation is considered inappropriate for this remote stream section.”
Among changes to regulations on ice fishing is one that would open to ice fishing specific waters currently deemed as trout waters in St. Lawrence, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis and Oneida counties. DEC says ice fishing can be allowed for at these locations.
DEC will accept public comments on the proposals through April 2.
DEC says the proposed regulation changes are the result of careful assessment of the status of existing fish populations and the desires of anglers for enhanced fishing opportunities. Several of the changes being considered are to remove special regulations that are no longer warranted.
Another regulation revision would more clearly specify that attempting to take fish by snagging is prohibited.
