CANTON – The St. Lawrence University Board of Trustees has elected the chief of Priceline.com to serve as its next chair along with four new trustees who will begin their terms on June 1.

Jeffery H. Boyd, Class of ’78, who is the president and CEO of Priceline.com, the popular travel web site, will lead the board beginning next month. He replaces Donald K. Rose, Class of ’64, who will retire as chair at the end of May after serving as the board’s leader since 2008.

At its May 18 meeting, the Board also chose Warren “Barry” Phelps, Class of ’69, to replace Boyd as vice chair, and two trustees, Joan Darrow Corey and S. Georgia Nugent, who will serve six-year terms.

Corey is a 1974 graduate of St. Lawrence who has dedicated herself to a number of causes over the past 25 years at the Chapin School and at Phillips Academy at Andover and others. She is also on the Education Committee of Lincoln Center Theater.

Nugent recently served for 10 years as president of Kenyon College in Ohio. She was a member of Princeton University’s first coeducational class, graduating cum laude in 1973, and received a Ph.D. in classics from Cornell University. Known nationally as an advocate for liberal arts education, Nugent has chaired the boards of the Council of Independent Colleges and Higher Education Resource Services and has served on the boards of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and the American Council on Education.

The St. Lawrence Board also elected two “McCurdy-Sprague” trustees, Jonathan “Jon” K. Cardinal, Class of ’08, and Heather L. McCauley, Class of ’06, to serve four-year terms.

A native of Ogdensburg, Cardinal is the director of economic development for U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. He oversees the Gillibrand’s legislative agenda on various economic policies and directs related statewide outreach. Previously, Cardinal was an aide on the staff of former Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

McCauley is an epidemiologist in the Division of Adolescent Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She studies the impacts of violence on adolescent health and has co-authored more than two-dozen journal contributions, technical reviews and other publications.

McCurdy-Sprague trustees are named in honor of Delos McCurdy, one of two graduates in the first class to be graduated (1865) and Sarah Elmira Sprague, one of the first two women to graduate (1866). McCurdy-Sprague trustees must have graduated from St. Lawrence between two and 10 years before their election.
