Potsdam's Lawrence Elementary School wins online video contest

POTSDAM – Lawrence Avenue Elementary School won an online video contest sponsored by musician Red Grammer winning the prize of an all-day visit to the school, including a daytime school concert, three daytime "informances," and an evening concert for the community.

Grammer posted on his Facebook page Friday, July 17, “I'm so excited to announce that Lawrence Avenue School of Potsdam, NY is the winner of the "I Am A Bucket Filler" Video Contest. Haven't we enjoyed all of the entries? Bravo to Jerusalem Elementary in Curtice, Ohio; Golden Hill Elementary in Florida, NY; and Soule Road Elementary in Liverpool, NY. You have each delighted us all. Congratulations!”

According to Facebook, the winning Lawrence Avenue video received 1,120 likes.

Grammer has performed at Potsdam Central in the past.

The theme of the contest was “I Am a Bucket Filler,” after one of Grammer’s songs. He invited schools to send videos of a classroom of kids, a school chorus or a whole school.

Larry Jenne, who recently retired as the school’s principal asked people to vote for the school's video to honor late music teacher Catherine Frick, who died July 1 at the age of 45.

Frick led school kids in a rendition of the song and entered the video in the contest.

“It is one of the fondest memories I have of Cathy - her teaching our students Red's songs and the joy they brought to us all,” wrote Jenne,

“It would mean the world to those of us who knew and loved Cathy and want to preserve her memory in any way we can,” said Jenne in an email message. “We need some likes so we can honor our colleague and carry on in her memory in the most amazing way possible.”

In addition to teaching music at the elementary school, Frick was superintendent of the Potsdam United Methodist Church Sunday School program for many years, and was a member of the Potsdam Community Band, and also conducted orchestra for the “Secret Garden” performances.

Grammer has been described by Parent’s Magazine as “the best voice in children’s music.”
