POTSDAM -- The surviving driver of one of the vehicles involved in the fatal head-on collision on Route 11 Saturday remains in critical condition at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, said state police in a Monday press release.
An autopsy on the other driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene by county coronor June Wood, was scheduled for Aug. 28 at Canton-Potsdam hospital, state police said.
The accident occurred around 2:21 p.m. Saturday.
State police said their investigation revealed that a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo operated by Karen Lemanquais, 60, of Potsdam, was traveling south on U.S. Highway 11, when her vehicle drove into the northbound lane. She then struck a northbound 2015 Hyundai Elantra head-on, which was operated by Samantha L. Allen, 20, of Hurlock, Md.
Lemanquais was ejected from her vehicle, state police said. She was transported by Potsdam Rescue to Canton-Potsdam Hospital and later transferred to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where she is in critical condition.
Allen was pronounced dead at the scene.
State police, in conjunction with the collision reconstruction unit, are continuing the investigation, said the press release.
State police were assisted at the scene by the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Potsdam Police Department, Potsdam Rescue, Potsdam Fire and the New York State Department of Transportation.
