POTSDAM -- Democrats in the Village of Potsdam will caucus at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5 in the meeting room at Town Hall, 18 Elm St., to pick a village trustee candidate
They hope to choose someone to represent the party in the November election to finish the term of former Trustee Nick Sheehan.
There is one year left in Sheehan’s term.
Cindy Goliber, who happens to be town clerk, was appointed to sit on the Board of Trustees in Sheehan’s stead until the next annual meeting this coming December when whoever is elected in November will take the seat.
That person could be Goliber, a Republican who has filed a petition to be on the ballot as an independent for the remaining year in Sheehan’s term.
Goliber said she filed the petition with the Board of Elections on Monday, with 62 signatures while only 49 valid signatures were required.
Sheehan resigned from the board this past winter during his first term when it became clear, in spite of earlier advice to the contrary, that his position with Sheehan Contracting could constitute a conflict of interest with village operations, particularly where contracts with the company were concerned.
At the time of his resignation, Sheehan, a new father, said time constraints had tipped the balance toward his decision to step down.
