Potsdam VFW preparing new memorial at Ives Park to honor those killed in nation's wars

POTSDAM – Veterans and village workers are preparing a new site in Ives Park for a memorial to honor those killed in the nation’s wars of the last 100 years.

Three monuments will be moved from the lawn in front of Clarkson University's Old Snell Hall to a new spot just east of the gazebo at Ives Park along the Raquette River.

Veterans’ groups will use the site for their Veterans Day memorial services for the fist time this Nov. 11 after having used the Snell site for years.

The first monument honoring the 14 Potsdam-area men who died while serving during World War I and the 43 men killed in action during World War II was erected in the late 1940s. That monument and the tablets honoring those who served in Korea and Vietnam will be moved to the new site.

Monuments honoring those who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan will be added, along with poles flying the American and Prisoner of War flags. A path from the memorials to the river is planned, and there will be new park benches.

Community members can honor a veteran with a memorial brick at the new site.

Engraved bricks are being sold for $125 to honor past and present veterans. The six-by-nine inch bricks are grey and with black lithochrome lettering. They will hold up to three lines of lettering, up to 17 characters per line.

People may order bricks and brochures can be picked up at the Potsdam VFW Post, 95 Market St. Proceeds from the brick fundraiser will offset costs for the VFW and DAV in paying for the monument.
