POTSDAM – Potsdam town representatives are bracing for pointed questions at tonight’s regular 6:30 council meeting, the first since notices of new higher property assessments have been sent out.
Some Potsdam property owners are concerned that their taxes will spike as a result of the first complete revaluation in the town since 2008, which indicates that property values have gone up, overall, by 13 percent in the last five years.
Notices of the higher assessments have gone out to Potsdam property owners over the course of the last week.
Town officials have said they have heard from many property owners already, and they expect to hear more tonight about the higher assessments at the meeting of the town council in the new Town Hall at 18 Elm Street.
They will be hard pressed to explain that higher assessments mean that property is worth more, but it does not necessarily mean that the tax bill on that property will go up.
Property owners who are convinced that their assessments are unfair will have the opportunity to persuade the assessor of that view, but not tonight.
James Snyder says that he will be available during the weeks of April 15 and 22, by appointment, to review assessments with taxpayers. He can be reached at 265-2810.
