POTSDAM – The Potsdam Town Board will consider overriding the state’s 2 percent tax cap in the 2016 budget Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the town hall.
The state mandated tax cap was implemented in 2011 as a way to decrease property taxes in New York State. However, municipalities may vote to override the tax cap to impose higher tax rates. Although the tax cap is referred to as a 2 percent cap, it can actually be more restrictive as it is based on inflation rates and other components.
This year the state comptroller predicted the cap will actually be closer to 1 percent. The cap is also fluctuates between municipalities as well with allowances based on health care and retirement costs also considered.
At the Tuesday meeting Potsdam councilors will also hear reports from the supervisor, clerk, highway superintendent and the recreation department.
The council will also here an update on a water and sewer survey regarding State Highway 56N and the River Road.
Budget requests and meetings are also listed on the agenda.
