POTSDAM – The town board is looking at devising and implementing a section of code to regulate fences after a dispute along Norwood Lake raised the issue.
The alleged difficulty arose when one lake homeowner built a fence all the way down to the waterline and neighbors objected. Setbacks from the road are also on the table.
The Town Council is just beginning its examination, looking at requiring a setback from the edge of a road of perhaps 15 feet and height restrictions.
That setback, according to Highway Superintendent John Keleher, would clear the town’s right-of-way without having to rely for reference on the edge of the property, which will vary, he said.
There is no local law regarding fences in the township now, according to Town Attorney Frank Cappello.
The issue came to the fore, Cappello said, when one homeowner put up a tall fence that went right down to the water.
