Potsdam Taxpayers Association holds protest petition signing session June 8

POTSDAM – The Town of Potsdam Taxpayers Association holds a Saturday protest petition-signing session June 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 7557 U.S. Rt. 11, at the Sheehan building parking lot across from Willow Tree Florist.

TOPTA is petitioning the Town of Potsdam to throw out the latest property valuation and revert to the previous assessment.

“If you’re a town of Potsdam resident and your property assessment has changed please stop by and sign the petition to get the 2013 Tentative Assessment stopped before it becomes finalized,” said TOPTA Chair Tracey Haggett-Sloan in her announcement of the session.

At the Potsdam Town Council’s April meeting dozens of angry property owners whose assessments had risen above the average increase complained that the latest assessments were out of line, and the protestations have continued.

The assessments on 243 parcels have been rolled back through grievances since the preliminary assessment was filed, TOPTA says by a total of more than $7 million, and they say that is evidence that supports their request that the entire assessment, of nearly 5,500 parcels assessed to be worth a total of more than $900 million, should be scrapped.

The petition is online at http://www.change.org/petitions/town-of-potsdam-council-and-town-assessor-stop-the-2013-assessment-and-roll-back-to-the-2012-assessment-levels.
