Potsdam seeking volunteers to fill planning, zoning board vacancies

POTSDAM --- The village seeks volunteers to fill vacancies and serve on its planning board and zoning board of appeals.

The planning board is responsible for reviewing subdivision and site plans, and issuing special permits. It also advises the village board on amendment of its 10-year comprehensive plan or leading the creation of a new one, amending the village map, or to undertake studies as directed by the mayor and village trustees.

Planners meet once a month from November to March and twice a month from April to October. Normal terms are five years. Some partial terms may also be filled. There is now one vacancy, and vacancies for two alternates, who participate if regular members cannot attend.

The zoning board of appeals hears zoning law appeals and appeals on decisions made by the code enforcement officer. It can also grant zoning variances. The board meets with the same frequency as the planning board, and the terms are also five years. One vacancy is for a full term, and another seat is open through May 2012. Two alternates are also sought.

No experience is necessary, but at least four hours of training per year, online or through workshops, is required.

Appointees must be village residents. People who are interested in serving on either body should contact Fred Hanss at fhanss@vi.potsdam.ny.us or 265-1670.
