POTSDAM -- Local Boy Scouts participated in a ceremony burning unserviceable U.S. flags with the Potsdam Amvets post Wednesday night, Veterans Day.
“For the flag retirement ceremony, we took unserviceable and weather-worn flags, built a fire pit and invited the Boy Scouts to participate for credit toward a badge,” said Jerry Deon of Amvets Post 282.
“We raise each flag to the top of the flagpole, then lower it to half staff, salute, raise it back up to the top, then bring it down, fold it, and drop it in the fire” in the ceremony, treating the flags with respect, Deon said.
“We had a nice turnout,” he said.
