POTSDAM — Leftover funds remaining from the $18 million capital project at Potsdam Central School will used to build a new nurse's office, renovated bathrooms, replace carpets and install security cameras.

“We are in an enviable position to have money left,” said superintendent Joann Chambers.

“You always have to plan for incidental costs and thankfully there was not a lot of bad news so we added things to our list.”

The $18 million project addressed peeling roofs, inefficient coolers, aging sidewalks, leaky ceilings and steam heating pipes from the1920s.

Chambers said the biggest project planned with the remaining money will be the addition of a new elementary nurse's office. A design of the new space was recently approved.

Some of the remaining funds will be used to replace carpets in the middle and high school libraries and music rooms. The carpet is on order.

A portion of the leftover money was used to completely renovate four bathrooms in the high school.

When finished, contractors will have installed 82 new cameras throughout the school’s three buildings and parking lots.

Chambers said a couple areas may not be satisfactory as far as coverage goes and a few more cameras could be added.

She said the original 12 cameras, which were installed prior to the capital project, were replaced with better quality cameras. Some of the original 12 were repurposed in areas where they would be better suited.

About 96 percent of the work has been completed with minor details like the patching of walls, replacement of lighting painting still to be done at all three schools.

Work projected for next month includes exterior painting at the middle school. At the highs school contractors will complete boiler performance testing, complete the roof at the entrance by the elevator and complete the painting of interior entrances and exterior metal.

“The project was mainly about energy efficiency and security…some of those things are not as visual as others,” she said.

Murnane Building Contractors, based out of Syracuse is the main contractor with additional work being done by Watson Electric, Norwood, and Burns Brothers Contractors, Syracuse.

The capital project was approved in December 2012 by voters. Construction began in the spring of 2014 and is expected to wrap up in April of next year.
