Potsdam school board considers naming track after revered former coach Lewis

POTSDAM – The running track at Potsdam Central School could be named for a revered former coach, if the school board review of the current rule results in change.

“Several supporters came to the board meeting to speak in behalf of Coach Bill Lewis in an effort to have the district track named in his honor,” said Superintendent Pat Brady.

Brady said Lewis was at the meeting.

“Since the current Board of Education policy does not allow naming of facilities, the board is reconsidering that policy,” Brady said.

The current district policy for recognizing distinguished individuals, as it is written, says that “The Board will consider a Board resolution or proclamation, a memento awarded to the individual, a plaque affixed to a wall in a hallway of a school building designated as a ‘Hall of Fame,’ a plaque affixed to a district facility. No other forms of recognition will be considered,” such as the proposal to name the track for Coach Lewis.

Many former athletes were at the meeting, “and Coach Lewis, in the ’60s and ’70s, had such an outstanding career that the Board of Education decided to send the policy to the Programs and Policy Committee for review, in order to see if it would be possible that the naming could occur,” Brady said.

No timeline for the review was revealed.
