POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Public Library had 105,527 visits last year, according to its recently released annual report.

The report also announced new staff, grants received and the start of a renovation project.

The library during that time period checked out 115,791 items (71,137 items are in the entire library collection).

The circulation at the Potsdam Library represents the second highest in the region, the report says.

In addition, there were 8,000 class and event attendees recorded over the year; 32,102 audio and eBooks read; and 566 new library cardholders registered over the year. The total cardholders at the Potsdam library numbers 7,629.

The report values library services at $2,142,586.

Over the course of the year the library garnered three grants to enhance its services. A Health Initiative Worksite Wellness Grant allowed the organization to adopt a staff wellness policy and add four sit-stand workstations. A NNYLYN Innovative Technology Grant provided $6,000 of video blogging and podcasting technology, including a Mac computer, studio mics, cameras and other items. Finally, an Early Learning Spaces Grant helped reupholster two vintage chairs, add flexible seating and toy storage and will fund a mural.

The library administrators have started planning a major renovation incorporating feedback from a recent patron survey. The first phase of the renovation will create an enclosed children’s area, a classroom and a computer lab. A state construction grant will cover about 65 percent of the cost, said a library press release. The library will attempt to raise the remaining 35 percent from the patrons through fundraising.

Staffing changes include Erin Gingrich now serving as a tech services assistant; and the addition of Rebecca Donnelly, children's librarian; Maggie McKenna, adult program coordinator; Mary Michalek, adult/ESL program assistant; and Lauren Buckley and Hans Kuno, library aides.
