Potsdam police warn of telephone scam asking for bail for relatives

POTSDAM -- Potsdam Police are warning residents of a phone scam asking for money to bail relatives out of jail.

Police said they received a report from a town resident of a telephone scam in which the caller, from another country, informs the person here that one of a relatives visiting abroad and somehow ran afoul of the police in that foreign country.

Police said the scammers usually request that the person locally send money via a wire service such as Western Union and may solicit a second or third wire transfer if the first one is made.

Police are asking residents to be vigilant and check with relatives to determine if the person that the caller claims to be in trouble is actually in that country.

Police said recipients of the call can obtain the telephone number for the American consulate in any specific country by calling the US Department of State at 1-888-407-4747.
