POTSDAM -- SUNY Potsdam students are planning a demonstration this afternoon in response to a recent threat against a minority professor.

Motorists are cautioned that travel delays may result and to seek alternate routes if possible.

Potsdam police say they are working with Potsdam University Police about the demonstration.

On Monday and Tuesday, black students en masse requested papers necessary for withdrawal then confronted the dean of students in a demonstration against what they see as an inadequate response to the latest threat.

On Nov. 11, university police charged former student Amjad Hussain with two counts of felony harassment as a hate crime stemming from two hate notes left in the professor’s office earlier this year.

For more about Hussain’s arrest see story.

SUNY Potsdam officials said the third message included “specific heinous threats against [Prof. John Youngblood] and [his] family. In addition, it specifically targeted students of color and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) students.”
