Potsdam Police Department responds to 1,771 incidents during first three months of 2017

POTSDAM – Officers of the Potsdam Police Department responded to 1,771 incidents and made 285 arrests in the first three months of 2017.

According to Police Chief Mark Murray, there were 25 penal law charges, comprising six felonies, 10 misdemeanors and nine violations.

There were 257 vehicle and traffic charges, six driving while intoxicated counts, one village ordinance charge, 24 unclassified misdemeanors and four drug arests.

In the chief’s first-quarter report is $1,225 in fess for service, such as record checks, fingerprinting for things such as employment, and vehicle inspections.

Items of note include the March 14 snow emergency and parking ban, a DEA drug take-back event at Kinney Drugs on Maple Street, and receipt of a $14,565 grant for police protective equipment.

Among training events during the quarter were a physical training instructor course attended by Lt. Ames, an evidence room technician course attended by Officer Seymour, a team tactics patrol officer course attended by Lt. Ames, a course on initial response to an active shooter incident attended by Sgt. Daniels and Officer Gates-Shult, and a Tazer instructor course attended by officer Benson.

Murray also reported that two officers in training will graduate from St. Lawrence County David Sullivan Police Academy at SUNY Canton June 2. Officers Jerrid Lavoie and Stephen David will then begin field training.

A bike patrol course, to be attended by four officers, will be held in June.

And Murray said a body-worn camera trial and demo is coming up.
