POTSDAM -- Potsdam Police Chief Kevin Bates plans to retire at the end of the month.
"I submitted my letter of resignation and emailed all the board members," he said.
Bates said there has been no particular incident that led him to the decision but rather that it just seemed like the right time.
Bates was appointed chief in March 2012, having been a sergeant with the department. At the time of his appointment he had been a member of the department for 17 years.
To become official, the village Board of Trustees must approve the resignation.
