POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Town Council opted at its Wednesday night meeting to adopt a new harassment and discrimination policy, but not the one the state had offered.
According to language in the 2018 New York state budget, municipal employers must adopt a sexual harassment prevention policy and training, or use a similar policy and training that meets or exceeds the law’s minimum standards.
The state model for that policy deals solely with sexual harassment, but an auditor for the town’s insurer, New York Municipal Insurance Reciprocal (NYMIR), “recommended a more comprehensive policy” and offered an administrative policy that includes provisions about sexual harassment and also general discrimination, according to Town Supervisor Ann Carvill.
Carvill said she was pleased with the work the auditor from NYMIR did recently. The auditor checked entrances for possible problems, inspected a recently repaired electrical box, and checked fire sprinklers, “so we are doing all we can to avoid being sued,” Carvill said.
NYMIR is a licensed, regulated not-for-profit insurer owned by its policyholders, almost 900 municipalities across the state.
