POTSDAM -- The former Potsdam Normal School could soon be designated as a state and national historic landmark.
The New York State Board for Historic Preservation recently nominated the old school to be added to the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
Built between 1917 and 1931, the buildings served as the campus of the Potsdam State Normal School, which was the sixth such school to be established by the state of New York to educate teachers.
Property owners, municipalities and organizations from communities throughout the state sponsored the nominations, according to the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
The school is now the old Snell Hall building at Park, Elm and Main streets and is part of Clarkson University’s old campus, according to SUNY Potsdam’s website.
The State and National Registers are the official lists of buildings, structures, districts, landscapes, objects and sites significant in the history, architecture, archeology and culture of New York State and the nation, the OPRHP said.
Property owners, municipalities and organizations from communities throughout the state sponsored the nominations, the OPRHP said.
Their addition to the registry is pending state and federal approval.
