POTSDAM -- The Potsdam Neighborhood Center is looking for volunteers to help the community by preparing taxes free of charge with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Volunteers will receive IRS-provided free tax law training and materials. They will learn how to prepare basic tax returns and learn about tax deductions and credits that benefit eligible taxpayers. These include credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly.
The VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $53,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and the elderly who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. Volunteer hours are flexible, generally just a few hours per week. The program would be open from mid-January through the tax filing deadline in April.
If successful in getting volunteers for a Potsdam Neighborhood VITA site, the Neighborhood Center will be teaming with SeaComm Federal Credit Union for a Super Saturday Tax event at the credit union’s Potsdam branch in February.
