POTSDAM — A Potsdam man was charged with driving while intoxicated Thursday morning after hitting a parked St. Lawrence County sheriff’s vehicle during a traffic stop on Market Street, according to Potsdam police.
Mustapha Hanouf, 52, was charged with first-offense DWI, speed in zone and unsafe start at 12:52 a.m.
Police said they observed him driving 48 mph in a 30 mph zone and they initiated a traffic stop. Hanouf was asked to move his vehicle to a safer location and when doing so his vehicle struck a sheriff’s patrol car that was parked in the parking lot.
Police said they could smell consumed alcohol coming from Hanouf. He was transported to the police station for field sobriety tests, which he failed.
Hanouf was then transported to Canton-Potsdam Potsdam for blood tests to confirm his blood-alcohol content (BAC).
Police did not list his BAC.
Hanouf was released on tickets returnable to Potsdam court Jan. 25 at 10 a.m.
