Potsdam lawnmower races slated for Summer Festival in July

POTSDAM -- Souped-up lawnmowers will again compete at another running of lawnmower races this summer at Sandstone Park next to Pine Street Arena.

The tentative date of the event, organized and sponsored by the town Recreation Department, is the Friday during the Potsdam Summer Festival, July 14.

The event last year “was a good money-maker for recreation,” said Town Board member Rose Rivezzi, chair of the joint town and village recreation committee on Tuesday.

The popular races, with souped-up grass-cutters of 20 or more horsepower, regularly draws mowers and drivers from around the North Country and beyond.

Concerns last year about the machines tearing up the ball fields at Sandstone Park were apparently not realized, so a consensus has formed to allow the races again this year.

Fees, sponsors and admission prices are not yet lined up, according to Potsdam Recreation Director Tim Carey.
